Overview

Stay in a hotel, resort or agriturismo and car-free itinerary through Florence, medieval villages and Tuscan flavors

A journey designed to discover Tuscany in a comfortable and authentic way, with Certaldo as the base and no need for a car. The stay can be arranged in a hotel, resort or agriturismo, depending on the desired style: either a more central and practical accommodation close to the train station, or a more relaxing and panoramic property immersed in the Tuscan landscape.

The itinerary includes travel mainly by train and public transport, with a fixed base in Certaldo and return every evening to the chosen accommodation. From Certaldo, Florence Santa Maria Novella can be reached in approximately 1 hour by train, making the city easy to visit as a day trip.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN CERTALDO AND VISIT TO BOCCACCIO’S VILLAGE

Arrival in Certaldo and check-in at the selected hotel, resort or agriturismo.

In the afternoon, first visit to Certaldo Alto, the medieval village linked to the figure of Giovanni Boccaccio. The upper part of the town can be easily reached by funicular, which connects Certaldo Basso with Certaldo Alto.

Walk through brick-paved alleys, panoramic views and historic palaces. During the visit, guests may discover Boccaccio’s House, Palazzo Pretorio and the intimate atmosphere of one of the most authentic villages in the Val d’Elsa.

Dinner (not included) in the village.

Recommended experience: guided visit of Certaldo Alto with storytelling dedicated to Boccaccio and the Tuscan Middle Ages.

DAY 2: FLORENCE BY TRAIN AND TUSCAN COOKING CLASS

After breakfast, departure by train from Certaldo to Florence Santa Maria Novella. The connection is convenient for a day visit, with direct trains operating along the Certaldo–Florence route.

Arrival in Florence and walk through the historic center: Piazza del Duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio and the most characteristic streets of the city center.

In the afternoon, possibility to include a Tuscan cooking class in Florence: a practical and engaging experience to learn how to prepare some of the most iconic dishes of Italian and Tuscan tradition, such as fresh pasta, regional recipes and desserts.

At the end of the lesson, lunch or dinner with the dishes prepared during the cooking class.

Return to Certaldo by train.

Included or recommended experience: Tuscan cooking class in Florence with expert chefs.

DAY 3: SAN GIMIGNANO BY TRAIN + BUS

After breakfast, departure from Certaldo by train to Poggibonsi-San Gimignano, a short and easy journey. From Poggibonsi, it is possible to continue to San Gimignano by bus with Autolinee Toscane, including the extra-urban line connecting Poggibonsi and San Gimignano.

Arrival in San Gimignano, the village of towers, famous for its medieval skyline and the unique atmosphere of its historic center. Walk through Piazza della Cisterna, Piazza del Duomo, artisan shops and panoramic viewpoints over the surrounding hills.

During the day, it is possible to include a tasting of Vernaccia di San Gimignano and typical local products, subject to the accessibility of the winery or with a tasting experience in the historic center.

Return to Certaldo by bus to Poggibonsi and then by train to Certaldo.

Recommended experience: Vernaccia wine tasting and Tuscan products in the center of San Gimignano.

DAY 4: SIENA BY TRAIN

After breakfast, departure by train from Certaldo to Siena. The train journey from Certaldo to Siena takes approximately 40 minutes on average, making the city one of the easiest excursions to enjoy without a car.

Arrival in Siena and full day dedicated to discovering the historic center: Piazza del Campo, the Cathedral, the streets of the Contrade, medieval palaces and the city’s most atmospheric corners.

Lunch (not included)  in a typical osteria or trattoria in the city center.

In the afternoon, free time to continue the visit, shop in local boutiques or join a guided tour dedicated to the Palio di Siena and the history of the Contrade.
