In the Footsteps of Leonardo Da Vinci: Trekking and Aperitif
Come with us to discover Leonardo’s reins through a simple and relaxing walk, where nature and history intertwine with each other, making the experience particularly curious and fascinating. ‘Le Briglie Leonardo’ is an interesting circular route from both a historical and landscape-environmental point of view. The tour begins and ends at our Villa in Spoiano , Barberino val D’Elsa.
We will cross a typical Chianti landscape between vineyards and olive groves until we reach the Agliena stream. During the journey along the stream we will be able to admire the 27 ‘Briglie’, that is the medieval hydraulic engineering structures built for the regulation and collection of the waters of the stream, which supplied the ancient city of Semifonte with water, destroyed by the Florentines in 1202 The bridle was used until the 18th century, but then abandoned. Only the restoration of the last few years has allowed its restoration and conservation.
A detailed map of these ‘bridles’ can be found in Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester in the paper “Methods for avoiding erosion of river banks” demonstrating that the “universal genius” had carefully studied these hydraulic structures. A painting of the Agliena valley attributed to Leonardo da Vinci is now in the British Museum in London. The stream is maintained by the Consorzio di Bonifica 3 Medio Valdarno and there are many explanatory panels along the route. To the right of the stream it is also possible to observe the erosions of the sandy and clayey formations of the Pliocene period typical of this side of Chianti.
We will then go up towards Tavarnelle Val di Pesa through typical rural villages and farmhouses until we return to the starting point where you can finally relax in front of a breathtaking view with an excellent aperitif . It will be offered fine local wine and a rich platter of local cold cuts and cheeses.
The entire route on the Aglena is 8.5 km long and is easily accessible.
